Western Growers and S2G Ventures have hosted AgSharks since 2017 to help budding agtech startups bring their inventions from development to market. This unique event allows startup companies to pitch their innovations in front of a live audience of the world’s largest specialty crop producers to win a $250,000 minimum investment. This year, three finalists will be selected to pitch their ideas to a panel of AgSharks, consisting of venture capitalists and fresh produce farmers, during the Western Growers Annual Meeting in Las Vegas, November 2-5, 2022.

Western Growers Chair Albert Keck will host the Chair Luncheon and Keynote featuring Admiral William H. McRaven, retired United States Navy four-star admiral. In his 37 years of service, Admiral McRaven commanded SEAL Team 3, Naval Special Warfare Group 1, Special Operations Command Europe, Joint Special Operations Command and U.S. Special Operations Command.
A veteran of the Persian Gulf War, war on terror, and wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, Admiral McRaven may be best known for organizing and overseeing Operation Neptune Spear, the special ops raid that led to the killing of Osama bin Laden on May 2, 2011. He also oversaw the capture and incarceration of Saddam Hussein and led the mission that rescued Captain Richard Phillips whose ship was captured by Somali pirates in 2009.
Admiral McRaven is the #1 New York Times bestselling author of multiple books, including Make Your Bed, Sea Stories, and The Hero Code. His 2014 University of Texas Commencement Address has been viewed nearly 50 million times on YouTube.

This session will feature experts from the plant genetics industry, growers, and retail/food service executives to assess the viability – economic, regulatory, and consumer/social – of cutting-edge breeding techniques. These technologies present opportunities in terms of enhanced flavors and eating experiences, as well as a potential solution to multiple challenges facing the produce industry, from pest and disease vulnerabilities to the need to enable automation and more.

Western Growers will honor California agricultural icon John Harris with the 2022 Award of Honor. The Award of Honor is Western Growers’ highest recognition of achievement and is given to individuals who have contributed extensively to the agricultural community. After the award ceremony, Super Diamond, a Neil Diamond tribute band, will deliver a glittering show performing Neil Diamond‘s classic hits.
